Analysis Of Opening Sequences

Clips For Analysis.

What are director’s aims?
What are the audience thinking, wondering, feeling, asking?
How does this engage the audience?
What are your favourite bits in these clips? Why?

Star Wars - I believe the direstor's aim was to get the audience to instinctively look at the screen due to the writing, 'A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...'. Buy doing this the audience eyes will be focused on the screen allow them to pay full atention to the following details of the opening sequence. The director's aim was to present that the audience where being taken into a journey into space, by using the background as space made the audience believe that they was infact traveling through space to take part in this epic journey and narrative. The favourite part of the Star Wars opening sequence is the music, is automatically grabs your attention and fits perfectally with the atmosphere and sets the mood straight away.

Naked Gun - I believe the director wanted to straight away involve the genre with is obviously a comedy. By doing this the audience will feel relaxed and can automatically begin laughing straight from the off for example when the man leaps away from the car onto a tree. I believe the audience will feel cheerful and very relaxed during this opening sequence, its a simple idea however very effective. My favourite part is infact the point of view camera work, it like Star Wars gives the audience a sence that it is infact them within the film and it some what gives the audience purpose.

To Kill A Mocking Bird - I believe the director just wanted to film a simple opening sequence however involving very effective techniques such as the use of moving marbles and the use of the croun drawings preformed by the child. The audience like Naked Gun will feel extremely relaxed however far more intreged to infact what is happening and will happen later on in the film, asking question such as who is the child? What is thier purpose to the narrative? And how will what we are seening on screen affect the narrative? My personal favourite part is again the use of the croun drawing preformed by the young girl or as we know her, Scout, Atticus Finch's daughter. I believe by doing this it gives the audience an idea the narritive will infact be presented by the character Scout and is a extremely effective technique.
